Maria Eduarda Tozoni Ono, widely recognized in the grappling world by her nickname “Duda,” was born on September 3, 2001, in Blumenau, Santa Catarina, Brazil, where she spent her childhood and teenage years.While she was not particularly drawn to traditional sports during her early childhood, her introduction to martial arts came at the age of 11. Her father, who had trained in grappling during his younger years, strongly believed that the discipline would greatly benefit her health, focus, and mental development. In 2013, he signed her up for a kids’ trial class. For Duda, it was love at first sight, and she instantly committed herself to the sport.Duda’s entire foundational journey was guided by head coach Marcos Cunha, the leader of The Match Champ (TMC) academy. Under his tutelage, she transformed from a local prospect into an international threat. While TMC was primarily a regional powerhouse, it became famous for developing elite female competitors, providing Duda with the perfect environment to thrive.Her career gained massive momentum as a purple belt, where she began turning heads by regularly defeating seasoned black belts on the professional circuit. This trend exploded during her time as a brown belt, as she frequently fought up in the AJP Tour’s mixed brown and black belt divisions, consistently holding her own against the sport’s most established international stars.In recognition of her elite skill set and dominant performances across the colored belt divisions, Master Marcos Cunha promoted Maria Eduarda to black belt in June 2021.
