Overview
Alison Victoria Tremblay (born November 30, 1990, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada) is a pioneering figure in Canadian grappling and a highly accomplished Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt representing Brazilian Top Team (BTT). Competing primarily in the Super Heavyweight (Super Pesado) division, Tremblay put together a highly dominant run through the international circuit to cement her place among the elite competitors of her generation.
Early Life & Hockey Foundations
Alison spent her early childhood in Montreal before her family relocated to Carleton Place, Ontario, when she was ten years old. Growing up, her primary athletic focus was hockey. She dedicated most of her youth to the ice, establishing a highly competitive hockey career.
Her introduction to martial arts came directly through her father, Peter Tremblay, an avid martial artist since the 1970s. In 1998, her father added Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to his skillset. By 2000, as a blue belt, he began teaching Alison at the family’s martial arts gym, Alpha MMA, making him one of the absolute pioneers of the sport in the Ontario region.
The Competitive Spark
Although Alison trained Jiu-Jitsu regularly from a young age, her heavy hockey schedule kept her from competing. That changed in 2007 when, at 16 years old, she tested her skills at her first grappling tournament. Thrilled by the competitive adrenaline, she immediately shifted her priorities, escalating her Jiu-Jitsu training workload to six days a week.
Historic Black Belt Milestone
Alison put together a highly dominant run through the colored belt divisions, capturing purple and brown belt World titles and running through the Pan American No-Gi circuits. Her consistent international success led to her black belt promotion on November 22, 2014.
The following year, she solidified her status as an elite competitor. At the 2015 IBJJF World Championship, Alison became only the second Canadian national in history to medal in the adult black belt division, cementing her legacy in Canadian grappling history.
