Overview

Andressa Nogueira Tolentino Guirau, commonly known as “Dessa,” is an elite Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt representing the historic Alvaro Barreto Jiu-Jitsu Association. Before making waves on the international grappling circuit, Guirau was a highly decorated elite gymnast on the Brazilian national circuit.

Gymnastics Background & Athletic Foundation

Guirau began practicing acrobatic gymnastics at the age of 11. Exhibiting a tremendous work ethic and natural spatial awareness, she quickly rose to the top tier of the sport in Brazil. Over a competitive career that spanned nearly a decade, she became a 7x Brazilian National Champion and proudly represented her country on the world stage at three separate World Gymnastics Championships in Orlando, Paris, and China.

Upon retiring from competitive gymnastics at age 20, Guirau sought out a new athletic outlet that could fit into her university schedule. While working an internship at a local fitness center, she decided to try a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class. The complex mechanics and physical problem-solving of grappling instantly captivated her.

Rapid Rise and Black Belt Excellence

Guirau began her training under Pedro Franzozi before transitioning to Equipe Barreto as a white belt. There, her instruction was taken over by Eduardo Guirau, who guided her development through every single belt rank. After putting together standout performances across South America as a brown belt, she was officially promoted to black belt in January 2024.

As a professional black belt, Guirau immediately established herself as a world-class strawweight contender, putting on highly technical performances and reaching the podium at the sport’s most prestigious tournaments.
