Augusto “Guto” Monteiro: Biography & Career Overview
Adriano Augusto Braga Monteiro, universally known as Guto Monteiro (or Gutinho), is a highly respected Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and sports organizer. He is widely recognized as a foundational pioneer of Jiu-Jitsu in Northern Brazil, co-founding Associação Monteiro—one of the most historically significant and prolific talent-producing academies in the world.
Early Life & Dynamic Training Roots
Born on October 26, 1968, in Manaus, the capital city of the Amazonas state in Brazil, Monteiro grew up as the second of four brothers, all of whom eventually achieved the rank of black belt.
He was introduced to Jiu-Jitsu through a family friend who invited him and his brothers to try a class under Luís Façanha. Façanha was notably one of the very first individuals to learn the Gracie style in the Amazon region, having trained directly during the late 1970s. Monteiro developed his foundational ground mechanics under Façanha before his family temporarily relocated to Rio de Janeiro for personal reasons.
While in Rio, the Monteiro brothers joined the historic Gracie Humaitá academy, refining their elite technical systems directly under the watchful eyes of Rickson, Rolker, and Royler Gracie.
Pioneering the Manaus Jiu-Jitsu Boom
As Monteiro consistently moved between Rio de Janeiro and his home state, he recognized the immense untapped athletic potential brewing in Northern Brazil. On January 25, 1988, he officially established Associação Monteiro in Manaus. His brothers (Binho, Yano, and Lucio) soon joined the coaching staff, building a premier technical headquarters.
At the time, professional tournament circuits were practically non-existent outside of Rio. Wanting to push the sport toward a formalized structure, Guto and his academy became some of the earliest and most vocal supporters of Carlos Gracie Junior’s initiative to establish the CBJJ and IBJJF in 1996. Because of his vast contributions to the regional circuit, a major annual tournament—the “Copa Guto Monteiro”—was established in his honor.
Black Belt Promotion & Exceptional Coaching Legacy
Due to regional political feuds between different fractions of the Gracie family and the Rio Federation, the Monteiro brothers were restricted from competing in official tournaments for long periods of time. Undeterred, Guto focused entirely on perfecting the mechanics of the art, ultimately earning his black belt in 1994.
As a mastermind developer of raw talent, Master Guto’s structured training rooms earned an international reputation for transforming local children into dominant global superstars. Associação Monteiro became widely revered as a world-class institute of grappling excellence, personally launching the early careers of iconic world champions and elite competitors, including:
Saulo Ribeiro
Xande Ribeiro
Gabriel Moraes (awarded his black belt by Guto)
Omar Salum
