The Legacy of Rosadão
Carlos Antonio Rosado (born in 1949) holds a legendary status in martial arts history as the youngest man to ever receive a red belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He stands uniquely as the only individual ever awarded a 9th-degree red belt by the iconic Grandmaster Carlson Gracie.
Early Life and the Carlson Gracie Academy
Finding His Passion: Rosado began training Judo at age 10, but viewed it as a chore. Everything changed at age 16 (1965) when he enrolled in Carlson Gracie’s academy in Copacabana, becoming student #60 on the gym’s very first membership roster.
The Academy “Enforcer”: Rosado proved to be an absolute natural at Jiu-Jitsu. By the time he was a purple belt, he was already dominating black belts. Master Carlson Gracie famously used Rosado to “welcome” visiting black belts to the gym, giving him a simple, one-word instruction: “Escóva” (smash him).
Praise from the Founders: Though competitions were rare during his prime, crowds would pack venues just to watch Rosado’s technical mastery. His skills were so sharp that Grand Master Helio Gracie was once caught on tape highly praising Rosado’s fighting abilities to fellow legend Pedro Hemetério.
Historic Belt Records and Later Years
The Unbreakable Record: Rosado received his black belt in 1979. Under the federation rules of that era, black belts over the age of 40 were eligible for a red belt. Because of his exceptional skill and dedication, Carlson Gracie awarded him the red belt as soon as he hit the age requirement, making him the youngest BJJ red belt in history. Since the IBJJF has since extended the mandatory timeframes required between belt ranks, this record is considered entirely unbreakable for the foreseeable future.
Passing on the Legacy: Even when pursuing a career outside of Jiu-Jitsu, Rosado would occasionally stop by the academy to roll, routinely running through the toughest active black belt competitors. Today, he runs the successful Rosado Jiu Jitsu academy in Copacabana alongside his son, Massa Rosado (a 5th-degree black belt).
