Biography
Claudio França is a highly revered Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt (5th degree) and a core pioneer responsible for the growth of the sport in the United States, particularly in Santa Cruz, California.

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Claudio was introduced to martial arts at just four or five years old through Judo. He excelled in the Japanese art of throwing, eventually earning his black belt through the prestigious Gama Filho University judo program. At around 12 years old, he discovered Jiu-Jitsu and fell in love with the martial art, dedicating himself entirely until he was awarded his BJJ black belt by his longtime master, Francisco Mansor.

By 1988, Claudio began coaching Jiu-Jitsu in Brazil. During this era, he teamed up with his friends Joe Moreira and Marcus Vinicius to co-found and organize the Copa Atlântico Sul. Running throughout the 1980s and 1990s, it quickly grew into one of the most prestigious and important Jiu-Jitsu tournaments in Brazil.

Recognizing the immense, untapped potential for the sport in North America, Claudio moved to the United States in 1995 and opened his own academy. In the 1990s, Jiu-Jitsu was widely misunderstood by the American public and frequently stereotyped as brutal MMA fighting. To shift public perception and highlight the technical, sporting aspects of the art, Claudio utilized his seasoned organizing skills to launch the US Open BJJ tournament.

Though the inaugural US Open started small with roughly 150 competitors, Claudio’s leadership turned it into a massive success. Today, the US Open stands as one of the premier fixtures on the international competitive calendar. Through his academy, Claudio Franca BJJ, he has produced a long line of top-tier grapplers and world-class black belts, including Garth Taylor and Paul Schreiner.
