Overview

Master Crolin Gracie is a highly revered 7th-degree red-and-black coral belt and one of the younger sons of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu founder, Carlos Gracie Senior. Recognized during his youth as one of the most exceptional natural talents inside the family, Crolin transitioned from an elite competitor into an influential coach and entrepreneur, serving as a founding architect of Gracie Barra and the primary pioneer who introduced the art to the southern regions of Brazil.

Early Life & Old-School Gracie Academy Roots

Born in the mountainous region of Teresópolis, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Crolin Gracie was immersed in the lifestyle of his family’s combative systems from birth. At age 11, he relocated to the heart of Rio de Janeiro, where his martial arts training took a highly structured turn. He trained daily under the strict guidance of his uncle, Grandmaster Hélio Gracie, and his legendary older brother, Rolls Gracie, at the original downtown Gracie Academy.

During his adolescence and early adulthood, Crolin was widely considered by mat historians to be one of the family’s most naturally gifted athletes. Being just a few months older than his cousin Rickson Gracie, historical accounts note that the two shared an intensely competitive rivalry on the mats during their teenage development. By 1978, Crolin was widely revered as the successor to Rolls Gracie’s throne as the family’s premier athletic champion, cementing his reputation with a dominant run through the high-profile Mello Tenis Club championship.

Adversity and Competitive Retirement

In 1980, Crolin joined Rolls Gracie’s elite wrestling squad alongside family members like Rilion and Carlinhos, aiming to test his submission setups against international wrestling systems. However, his competitive aspirations were tragically cut short when he contracted a severe, debilitating case of infectious mononucleosis.

The chronic health setbacks following the illness, coupled with the profound shock of the sudden passing of Rolls Gracie in 1983, led Crolin to step away from active competition. He returned to Teresópolis to heal, redirecting his immense technical passion entirely toward coaching, lineage preservation, and international business expansion.

The Birth of Gracie Barra & Southern Expansion

Transitioning fully into his entrepreneurial role, Crolin joined forces with his brothers Carlos Gracie Jr. and Rilion Gracie to co-found the iconic Gracie Barra Academy in 1986 in Barra da Tijuca. He later sold his administrative shares to his cousins, the Machado brothers, to focus directly on regional developmental growth. He became a monumental figure in expanding Jiu-Jitsu outside of Rio de Janeiro, introducing the sport to the southern region of Brazil—particularly establishing a massive footprint in Florianópolis—before eventually scaling his vision north to establish academies in Miami, USA, under the Gracie Gym banner.
