Overview
Master Edson Carvalho is a highly decorated 7th-degree red-and-black coral belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and a formidable 6th-degree black belt in Judo. Universally recognized as a master of dual-sport grappling mechanics, Carvalho has spent over 35 years traveling, competing, and teaching across major international martial arts epicenters—including Brazil, Japan, and the United States—establishing a reputation as a highly technical vanguard and a compassionate, family-oriented mentor.
Early Life & Authentic Grappling Roots
Born and raised in Brazil, Sensei Edson Carvalho literally grew up on the mats, entirely immersed in the strict conditioning and structural systems of old-school South American grappling. Coming from an authentic, world-class lineage, his childhood and adolescence were dictated by intense physical preparation, split evenly between the leverage-based ground controls of Jiu-Jitsu and the explosive throwing mechanics of traditional Judo.
This comprehensive training philosophy allowed him to cross-train flawlessly, sharpening an elite combat style that integrated standard judo footwork and hip tosses into tight, suffocating ground-and-pound and submission passing chains. Driven by a desire to test his systems globally, Carvalho spent years traveling as an active competitor, absorbing technical methodologies from prominent academies throughout South America, Asia, and North America.
The Growth of Team Carvalho in New Jersey
Transitioning his vast international competitive experience into a permanent instructional career, Sensei Edson established his flagship headquarters, Edson Carvalho Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu / Team Carvalho, in Paterson, New Jersey. The foundational roots of the academy were originally sparked by his brother, Sensei Ricardo Carvalho, who initiated the team to accommodate a massive, rapidly growing following of dedicated regional students.
Under Edson’s continuous direct technical guidance, the facility has expanded into a premier, state-of-the-art 5,500-square-foot training center. Catering to a highly diverse student body, Master Edson carefully tailors his curriculum to benefit all walks of life—ranging from everyday hobbyists looking to rebuild their physical fitness, to young children, senior citizens, and professional mixed martial artists (MMA) seeking to insulate their wrestling bases against high-level cage tactics.
Coaching Philosophy and Legacy
Renowned throughout the East Coast grappling community for his profound spatial intelligence and deep mechanical knowledge, Sensei Edson remains a highly sought-after strategist for active competitors. Despite his lethal master-level credentials, his students routinely describe him as a deeply sincere, warm, and kind-hearted mentor who prioritizes character development over sheer athletic vanity.
By consciously engineering a tight-knit, family-oriented environment—frequently described within the academy as a “team of brothers”—Master Edson balances a highly welcoming, supportive community culture with a structured, demanding training room environment. This ensures that every practitioner who steps onto his mats is pushed to reach their absolute highest personal and technical potential.
