Overview
Master Fabio Santos is a legendary 7th-degree red-and-black coral belt and one of the most respected pioneers of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the United States. Forged in the golden era of Rio de Janeiro grappling, Santos trained directly under icons Rolls Gracie and Rickson Gracie. Beyond his technical prowess and highly active veteran tournament career, Santos played an indispensable behind-the-scenes role in the birth of modern mixed martial arts, serving as a vital training anchor before establishing one of the first and most traditional Jiu-Jitsu institutions in Southern California.
Early Life & Golden Era Foundations
Fabio Santos was born on April 4, 1956, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He caught his first glimpse of martial arts as a child under a regional instructor named “Bernardo.” However, his true, lifelong dedication to the art was sparked at age 15 when he entered the historic academy shared by legendary brothers Rolls and Carlson Gracie in the heart of Copacabana.
Training during a transitional milestone for the sport where formal public tournaments were scarce, Santos sharpened his claws through relentless, grueling internal mat matchups. He cross-trained daily alongside an elite teenage generation that would go on to shape modern combat sports history, including Royce and Royler Gracie. Recognizing his exceptional spatial mechanics and sharp leadership qualities, Rolls Gracie appointed Santos as an assistant academy instructor while he was still a purple belt, trusting him to direct structural drills.
The Transition to Rickson Gracie and Emigration
Following the sudden, tragic passing of Rolls Gracie in a paragliding accident, the academy shook up. Santos, alongside many of Rolls’ primary students, transitioned his home camp to study under the undefeated champion Rickson Gracie. Recognizing the young stylist’s mastery, technical clarity, and devotion, Rickson ultimately awarded Santos his black belt.
After successfully completing a formal university degree in Physical Education in Brazil, Santos sought out new economic and martial opportunities abroad. In the mid-1980s, he immigrated to the United States. He initially spent a brief period working as a high-end personal trainer in New York City before relocating to Salt Lake City, Utah. In Utah, he preserved his combat readiness by cross-training heavily with local judokas, collegiate wrestlers, and fellow iconic BJJ pioneer Pedro Sauer.
Anchoring the Birth of the UFC & The San Diego Legacy
Upon discovering through a martial arts magazine article that his childhood training partners Rorion and Royce Gracie had established a training base in California, Santos immediately headed west to align forces with them. His timely arrival coincided with an explosive pivot point in global sports history: Royce Gracie was actively isolating himself to prepare for the inaugural Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC 1).
To free Royce from operational distractions so he could focus entirely on his high-stakes historic training camp, Santos stepped up to fully manage the daily operations and head coaching responsibilities at the main Gracie academy. In 1994, looking to spread authentic techniques down the coast, Santos permanently relocated to San Diego, initializing a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu affiliate. Two years later, he branched out independently to establish the Fabio Santos BJJ Academy. Today, his facility stands as one of the oldest, most traditional, and deeply respected martial arts institutions in North America. Master Fabio Santos continues to fiercely guard the classic submission philosophies of his youth, ensuring the leverage-based heritage of the Gracie lineage is passed down unaltered to future generations.
