Biography
Born on February 12, 1968, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Jean Jacques Machado is universally recognized as one of the most technical and influential Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitors and instructors in history. Born with Amniotic Band Syndrome, which left him without fingers on his left hand, Jean Jacques defied all physical limitations to master the complex, grip-reliant mechanics of the sport, developing an incredibly unique and devastatingly effective open guard game.
Machado’s connection to the sport runs deep through his family; he is related to the Gracie family through his mother’s side. Alongside his brothers, Jean Jacques began his formal training under his cousin, Carlos Gracie Junior, during a golden era when “Carlinhos” was working as an assistant instructor at Rolls Gracie’s legendary academy. Following Rolls’ tragic passing, Carlos Junior established the historic Gracie Barra academy in Barra da Tijuca, appointing a highly talented Jean Jacques as the team’s main instructor. In this role, Machado shaped and mentored a generation of future legends, including Helio “Soneca” and Roberto “Gordo” Correa.
Shortly after earning his black belt, Jean Jacques relocated to California to help his older brother, Rigan Machado, grow their brand in the United States. In America, the Machado brothers revolutionized the sport by breaking down traditional taboos and openly teaching international students (“gringos”). They famously prepared powerhouse wrestlers like Mark Kerr and Ricco Rodriguez for elite competition, and taught martial arts film stars such as Chuck Norris and Steven Seagal.
Because high-level black belt Jiu-Jitsu tournaments were virtually non-existent in America during the early 1990s, Jean Jacques maintained his competitive edge by entering Sport Sambo, capturing multiple State Championships and a Pan American Championship in 1993. He also ventured briefly into professional MMA.
Machado cemented his status as a global grappling deity at the 1999 ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship. Putting on one of the greatest performances in submission grappling history, he tore through the 77 kg division, submitting every single opponent—including Caol Uno and Hayato Sakurai—to capture the gold medal. Beyond the mats, Jean Jacques and his brothers crossed over into mainstream pop culture, appearing in over 20 episodes of Chuck Norris’s Walker, Texas Ranger and starring in their own film, Bad Boys from Brazil.
