Overview

Rafael “Formiga” Monteiro Barbosa is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, elite competitor, master instructor, and multi-time World Champion from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A foundational figure in modern BJJ history, Formiga is widely celebrated as one of the premier butterfly guard specialists of all time, as well as a key architect behind major international teams, including Soul Fighters and Double Five (D5). Formally promoted to black belt in 2002 by André “Dedeco” Almeida, his transitional legacy as a championship competitor, guard innovator, and global academy founder firmly secures his standing at the absolute vanguard of contemporary martial arts history.

Early Life & The “Formiga” Ascendancy

Born on January 8, 1983, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Rafael Barbosa began his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training at age 11 after witnessing Royce Gracie’s historic performance in the inaugural UFC. Being the youngest and smallest practitioner in an adult-dominated class earned him the affectionate nickname “Formiguinha” (little ant), which evolved into his iconic moniker, “Formiga.”

Progressing rapidly through the ranks under coach André “Dedeco” Almeida, Formiga was awarded his BJJ black belt in 2002. Driven to create a high-performance, collaborative training hub, Formiga co-founded **Soul Fighters BJJ** in 2008 alongside Augusto “Tanquinho” Mendes and close teammates, rapidly establishing a dominant presence in Rio de Janeiro.

Coaching Legacy & Double Five (D5)

After establishing an elite competitive record in Brazil, Formiga relocated to the United States to expand his instructional footprint. In 2019, he partnered with world-class black belt competitor João Gabriel Rocha to found **Double Five (D5)**—an international team association that swiftly expanded into a major power across the global tournament circuit.

Throughout his career, Formiga has demonstrated exceptional athletic longevity. After competing at the highest level of adult divisions during the 2000s, he continued his dominance on the IBJJF World Masters circuit, securing multiple world titles and double-gold podium finishes.

The Formiga Blueprint & Butterfly Guard Precision

Tactically, Rafael “Formiga” Barbosa is universally regarded as a master innovator of the butterfly guard. Operating off his back with precise hook placements, elevation levers, and body-weight shifts, he systematically unbalances opponents before launching dynamic sweep variations or transitioning into back-take entries.

Beyond his individual accomplishments, Professor Formiga continues to coach and mentor generations of world-class black belts. Rafael “Formiga” Barbosa stands securely enshrined at the absolute pinnacle of modern grappling history—an eternal monument to guard innovation, championship longevity, and uncompromised leadership.
