About

Full Name: Ricardo De La Riva GodedDate of Birth: 1965Place of Birth: Rio de Janeiro, BrazilLineage: Mitsuyo Maeda > Carlos Gracie > Carlson Gracie > Ricardo De La RivaMain Achievements: World Bronze Medallist (2002), Copa Cantão Champion (1985)Weight Division: Peso Pluma / Super Featherweight ($64text{ kg}$ / $141text{ lbs}$)Favorite Technique: De La Riva GuardTeam/Association: Carlson Gracie Academy (formerly) / De La Riva Jiu-JitsuEarly Life and the Beach DisputeRicardo De La Riva was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1965. His path into martial arts began unexpectedly in January 1980, when he was 15 years old. While playing soccer on Copacabana beach with his brothers, another group of children aggressively demanded to join the game. The argument grew tense enough that the De La Riva brothers were forced to leave the beach. When they told their father what had happened, the family patriarch was outraged. Wanting his sons to know how to defend themselves, he immediately enrolled them in Jiu-Jitsu. Because their father was a massive fan of Carlson Gracie from his legendary Vale Tudo fighting days, he chose Carlson’s famous academy in Copacabana.Surviving the “Arrebentação Team”The Carlson Gracie Academy was world-renowned for its aggressive, heavy, and crushing guard passers—a squad nicknamed the “Arrebentação Team.” De La Riva was a relatively small, lightweight, and highly flexible teenager who stood little chance trying to match the sheer power of his training partners. To survive the daily onslaught at the gym, he was forced to look for alternative solutions from the bottom. He began hooking his leg outside his opponent’s thigh and controlling their ankle. This hyper-flexible defensive style allowed him to stay safe and completely offset the balance of his heavier teammates. The Birth of the “Pudding Guard”Initially, De La Riva’s unique positioning wasn’t called by his name. His teammates dubbed it the “Guarda Pudim” (Pudding Guard) because whenever he implemented the hook, his opponents would completely lose their base, going “wobbly” like pudding. He was awarded his black belt by Master Carlson Gracie in 1986. However, the position officially changed names in 1985 at the Copa Cantão tournament. De La Riva faced the heavily favored and previously unbeaten Royler Gracie. By utilizing his signature “pudding” hook, De La Riva pulled off a historic upset victory. The martial arts media covering the event began calling the position the “De La Riva guard,” a name that revolutionized modern Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and remains a fundamental pillar of the sport today.Competitive Retirement and Later YearsIn 1993, De La Riva stepped away from active competition to dedicate his life entirely to teaching and building his own association, De La Riva Jiu-Jitsu.However, the competitive fire never fully left. In 2002, at 37 years old, he decided to test himself against the new generation of athletes at the IBJJF World Championships. Showing that his classic game still held up at the highest levels, he fought his way to the semi-finals, securing a prestigious bronze medal. He followed this up with an appearance at the ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship in 2003 and a series of exhibition matches in 2004.Coaching LegacyAs an instructor, Master De La Riva became one of the most respected figures in grappling history. He has produced an incredible roster of world-class black belts, including MMA legends like Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira, Rogério “Minotouro” Nogueira, Walter “Broca”, and Helvécio Penna.
