About
Roberto Magalhães, widely known by his nickname “Roleta” (Portuguese for “Roulette”), is a legendary figure in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He is celebrated as one of the all-time greatest BJJ competitors and a visionary innovator who revolutionized the modern grappling game in the 1990s through his development of the inverted guard.
Born in Aracajú in the northern Brazilian state of Sergipe, Magalhães spent five years training in karate during his youth. Believing striking was superior for self-defense, he initially resisted grappling. However, at age 17, after witnessing a Jiu-Jitsu instructor demonstrate a technique that would have helped him in a past street brawl, he decided to pick up the art under coach Joe Moreira. He eventually committed fully to grappling, relinquishing karate at the purple belt level to move to Rio de Janeiro and train at the elite Gracie Barra academy.
Innovation & The Inverted Guard
Magalhães was an engineering student who recognized that he lacked the natural, explosive athleticism of some of his peers. Realizing that relying solely on standard techniques would give more athletic opponents the upper hand, he used his analytical mind to obsessively draft new positions.
He would frequently wake up in the middle of the night to sketch concepts on paper. This immense creativity led to his development of the Inverted Guard, a highly unorthodox style at the time that completely altered the trajectory of modern competitive Jiu-Jitsu.
Competitive Dominance
In 1996, Magalhães was awarded his black belt specifically to compete in the inaugural IBJJF World Championship. At the time, the Carlson Gracie Academy held a fierce rivalry with Gracie Barra, and Carlson Gracie’s “ace” was Wallid Ismail, who had been undefeated for years.
Gracie Barra utilized Magalhães as their secret weapon; his strange, inverted positions completely caught Ismail off guard, leading to a historic sweep and victory. Magalhães went on to win the tournament, securing his place as the first-ever Middle-Heavyweight World Champion—a title he would capture a total of four times.
Main Achievements:
4x IBJJF World Champion (1996, 1997, 1998, 2000)
4x IBJJF Pan American Champion (1996, 1997, 1998, 1999)
CBJJ Brazilian National Champion (1996)
IBJJF World Championship Silver Medalist (1998, 1999)
Academic Success & Legacy
Alongside his rampant success on the mats, Magalhães achieved academic excellence by completing his Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering. Following his retirement from elite competition, he dedicated himself to teaching, opening Roleta BJJ, and conducting seminars across both Brazil and the United States to pass down his highly technical approach to the guard.
