Early Life & The Sudden Pivot to Grappling

Rodrigo Cavaca was born on January 27, 1981, in Santos, a prominent coastal city in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Throughout his childhood and teenage years, Cavaca was a deeply passionate, high-level football enthusiast, dedicating his daily life to competing in Futebol de Salão (five-a-side indoor soccer). It was not until he reached the age of 19 that he first stepped onto the mats of the “Arte Suave,” prompted by close neighborhood companions who held the rank of blue belt and consistently challenged his athletic capabilities.

Cavaca took his inaugural lesson in Santos under an instructor named Sarruço at a local satellite academy of Alliance, where he rapidly absorbed foundational concepts to earn his blue belt. As his indoor soccer trajectory plateaued, he executed a permanent lifestyle pivot to invest 100% of his focus into competitive jiu-jitsu. Seeking an uncompromising training room to match his global ambitions, he transitioned to the Integração Jiu-Jitsu Team under the guidance of Master Élcio Figueiredo—a respected Carlson Gracie black belt. Under Figueiredo’s technical curation, Cavaca’s career exploded, cleaning out regional brackets to capture consecutive Brazilian National and World titles across the purple and brown belt divisions before being awarded his black belt graduation on October 28, 2005.

The Ankle Lock Revolution & The Checkmat Era

Recognizing the absolute necessity of ongoing technical refinement, Cavaca undertook a grueling routine, traveling three times a week from Santos to the metropolis of São Paulo to submerge himself in the high-performance training rooms led by Leonardo Vieira at the Brasa academy. When Vieira subsequently orchestrated a split to construct the legendary Checkmat team alliance, Cavaca followed his mentor, establishing highly successful Checkmat affiliate pipelines in Santos and across various international territories.

Collaborating extensively with analytical American grappling coach Roli Delgado, Cavaca re-engineered the mechanics of the straight ankle lock (botinha).
