About

Rorion Gracie (born January 10, 1952) is a Brazilian-born martial artist, author, producer, lawyer, and entrepreneur. He is widely recognized as one of the most influential figures in modern martial arts, responsible for introducing Gracie/Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) to the United States and co-founding the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).He is the oldest son of Grand Master Hélio Gracie and holds a 9th-degree red belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the highest possible rank achievable by a living practitioner.Early Life and EducationRorion was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, into the legendary Gracie martial arts dynasty. Under the strict tutelage of his father, he began learning and demonstrating jiu-jitsu from a very young age. He pursued a formal education alongside his martial arts training, ultimately graduating with a law degree from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.Spreading Jiu-Jitsu to AmericaIn 1978, Rorion moved to Southern California to establish a footprint for Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in the United States. To make ends meet, he worked as an extra in television and movies while teaching martial arts to a small group of students out of his garage in Hermosa Beach. To prove the effectiveness of his family’s art, Rorion continued the “Gracie Challenge” tradition—inviting fighters of any discipline (karate, boxing, kung fu) to engage in no-rules matches. The dominance of BJJ in these challenges quickly drew a dedicated following. In 1989, alongside his brothers Royce, Rickson, and Royler, he opened the first official Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Torrance, California.Hollywood and the Birth of the UFCRorion’s expertise eventually caught the attention of Hollywood. He served as a fight choreographer and technical advisor for major films, most notably training Mel Gibson and Gary Busey for Lethal Weapon (1987) and Rene Russo for Lethal Weapon 3 (1992).Seeking a massive global platform to showcase the supremacy of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, Rorion teamed up with promoter Art Davie in 1993 to create the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). The inaugural tournament featured fighters of vastly different styles with no weight classes and minimal rules. Rorion chose his younger brother, Royce Gracie, to represent the family style. Royce’s dominant victories over much larger opponents revolutionized the martial arts world forever, birthing the sport of modern Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).Military and Law Enforcement ContributionsIn 1994, top-tier U.S. military personnel approached Rorion to design an effective hand-to-hand combat system for elite units. He developed Gracie Combatives, which later became the foundation for the U.S. Army’s Modern Army Combatives Program (MACP). He also developed defensive tactics for law enforcement, now synthesized under Gracie Survival Tactics (GST), which is utilized by military units, the CIA, and law enforcement agencies across the globe.Key Accomplishments & LegacyCo-founder of the UFC: Changed the trajectory of combat sports globally.9th-Degree Red Belt: One of only a handful of individuals to hold the rank.Martial Arts History Museum Hall of Fame: Inducted in 2009.Author: Published The Gracie Diet (2010), a book detailing the nutritional regimen developed by his uncle, Carlos Gracie.Notable Students: Has trained high-profile figures including Chuck Norris, Ed O’Neill, and modern BJJ masters like his son, Rener Gracie.
