About

Sérgio Souza, universally known by his nickname “Bolão”, is a historical figure in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Renowned as one of the most feared and technically innovative competitors of the 1980s and 1990s, he revolutionized the sport’s guard work and went on to become an elite mastermind coach, founding the influential Rio Jiu-Jitsu Club.Early Life & Move to RioBorn on July 23, 1964, in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil, Souza originally sought out Jiu-Jitsu at around age 14 to learn basic self-defense. He spent his first seven months training under a coach named Walter at the Academia Rodney in Manaus before permanently relocating to Rio de Janeiro.Upon arriving in Rio, his friendship with Carlson Gracie Junior led him to step through the doors of the legendary Carlson Gracie Academy. Recognizing the teenager’s raw potential, Master Carlson immediately tested him against an elite featherweight student, Clovis da Silva. After being cleanly submitted four times in a short sparring session, Souza was so profoundly moved by the efficiency of the technique that he signed up on the spot. The “Bolão Effect” & The Hook GuardSouza quickly climbed the competitive ladder, establishing himself as a top-tier middleweight. He gained international notoriety for his lethal guard game during an era when top-position passing was heavily favored.Souza is highly credited as a crucial pioneer of the modern Butterfly Guard (historically referred to as the hooks guard). He modified the traditional position by applying distinct overhooks, controlling his opponent’s opposite-side gi pants, and creating a signature leverage system to sweep heavier opponents. This widely utilized mechanic became formally known on the mats as the “Bolão Sweep.” His competitive dominance culminated in 1985 when the Media Association awarded him the prestigious “Best Athlete of the Year” (LINJI) award.Co-Founding Rio Jiu-Jitsu ClubBy the late 1980s, Souza’s deep understanding of grappling mechanics led him to become one of the main assistant coaches at the Carlson Gracie headquarters. He eventually transitioned to running his own program at the “Clube Israelita” in Copacabana.Looking to elevate the sport’s professional landscape, Souza joined forces with elite champion Murilo Bustamante to launch the Rio Jiu-Jitsu Club. Designed to actively challenge the most dominant stables in the country, the team shook up the circuit during their debut World Championship (Mundial) appearance, securing seven gold medals and a second-place finish in the team standings.Global Expansion & Later CareerIn 2002, Souza relocated to the United States, settling in Philadelphia to introduce his technical systems to the North American market at the Power House Gym. A lifelong student of physical culture, he utilized his time in the U.S. to earn post-graduate degrees in Personal Training and Bodybuilding, eventually synthesizing his grappling and conditioning knowledge into a trademark program called Personal Fighting. After returning to Brazil, Souza was recognized as a Coral Belt for his lifelong dedication to the art. He has personally developed and promoted an expansive tree of world-class black belts who have founded premier global networks, including Zé Marcello (Icon Team) and Roberto Atalla (Rio Grappling Club).Competitive ProfileWeight Division: Peso Médio (82 kg / 181 lbs)Favorite Position: Butterfly Guard / Hook Guard SweepsNotable Victories: Jean Jacques Machado, Fabio Gurgel, Leo Castello BrancoMain AchievementsAwarded “Athlete of the Year” — LINJI (1985)1st Place — Copa Armazem do Esporte / RJ State Championship (1989)1st Place — Copa Company Champion / RJ State Championship (1988)1st Place — Copa Blue Marlin Champion (1988)1st Place — Rio de Janeiro State Tournament (1986)1st Place — Copa Lightning Bolt (1984)1st Place — Brazilian Team Nationals (1997 as Head Coach)
