About

Victor de Oliveira Estima is a highly accomplished Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) black belt representing the Gracie Barra academy. Renowned as one of the top middleweight competitors of his generation, he is celebrated both for his aggressive submission game and for co-creating the “Estima Lock,” a devastating foot lock that revolutionized modern leg attack systems.

Early Life and Finding the Jiu-Jitsu “Bug”
Born on January 8, 1985, in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil, Estima was not naturally drawn to sports as a child. However, at age eight, he decided to follow his older brother, future world champion Braulio Estima, into a local Judo club. While his time in Judo was short-lived, Victor followed his brother once again at age 12, this time stepping onto the mats of a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy under instructor Charles dos Anjos.

Because the academy lacked students his own age, a young Victor found himself constantly training with full-grown adults. Discouraged by the physical disparity, he stepped away from formal training for a few years. Despite his sabbatical, he regularly attended tournaments to support Braulio. This constant exposure kept the martial arts “bug” alive, eventually drawing him back to the mats as a teenager.

Rising Under Zé Radiola
Upon his return to the academy, Charles dos Anjos had departed, leaving the legendary coach Zé “Radiola” in charge. Under Radiola’s tutelage, Victor’s natural gifts flourished. He went on a historic tear across his home state, famously never losing a single match in Pernambuco and frequently dominating adult divisions while still in his early teens.

As a purple belt, Victor began taking extended trips to England to train with Braulio, who had relocated there to establish a European base. Braulio’s mentorship drastically accelerated Victor’s technical development and competitive mindset. This brothers’ partnership culminated in 2006 when Victor was awarded his black belt by Carlos Gracie Junior.

The Creation of the Estima Lock
Victor permanently settled in the United Kingdom, partnering with his brother to run Gracie Barra Midlands. It was during a training camp for the 2009 ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship that the brothers innovated a unique foot lock setup.

While practicing top-position guard passing, Victor found a way to trap an opponent’s foot against his own torso when they attempted an open or inverted guard. Refined alongside Braulio, the Estima Lock quickly became a feared weapon on the international circuit. Victor famously showcased its mechanics at the 2011 No-Gi World Championships, using it to submit top-tier opponents back-to-back on his way to a gold medal.
