About

Alex Liscano Filho is a highly accomplished Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt competitor representing the world-renowned Checkmat team. Competing primarily in the Heavyweight (Pesado) and Medium-Heavy (Meio Pesado) divisions, Liscano has established himself as a formidable force on the IBJJF global circuit.

Early Life & Introduction to Martial Arts
Born in February 2003 in the coastal city of Tramandaí in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, Liscano grew up in the neighboring city of São Leopoldo. At age nine, seeking a way to deal with school bullying and lose weight, he began training in Judo under coach André Lisboa.

Liscano fell in love with training, eventually using Jiu-Jitsu classes to refine his ground game for Judo. However, after suffering a broken arm from a Judo throw, he briefly stepped away from grappling to try kickboxing. He eventually returned to the mats after realizing that Jiu-Jitsu rules permitted guard pulling—a mechanic that eased his fear of being forcefully thrown.

Rise Through the Ranks
Liscano restarted his dedicated grappling journey in 2016 under coaches Alex Tchaka and Michael Maia. His competitive breakthrough came just a year later in 2017 when he won the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals in the orange belt division.

Seeking to elevate his career, he initially moved to Alliance, training under Moacir Mendes Jr. and Mario Reis. Looking for the absolute best environment to maximize his potential, he later transitioned to Team Checkmat in Curitiba under Sebastian Lalli. It was under Lalli’s guidance that Liscano truly blossomed, tearing through the colored belt ranks and securing elite podium finishes, culminating in a Brown Belt World Championship title in 2025.

On May 31, 2025, following his spectacular run, Liscano was awarded his black belt by Sebastian Lalli.
