About
George Gracie (born in 1911) was the second youngest of the original Gracie brothers. He was the first true champion developed by the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu system in the 1920s and 1930s, known for carrying the family flag across Brazil by competing in Jiu-Jitsu, Luta Livre, Catch Wrestling, and Vale Tudo (No-Holds-Barred).
Key Biography Facts
Early Hardships: After their father lost his business in Belém do Pará, the family moved to Rio de Janeiro in deep poverty. George and his brother Helio were initially sent to live and eat at a rowing club via a charity scholarship until their older brother, Carlos, pulled George out to help open the very first Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy.
The “Star Pupil”: George was an absolute sponge for grappling knowledge and quickly became an assistant coach and the standout fighter of the academy.
Lifestyle Clashes: George was a “wild man” who loved Rio’s nightlife and flatly refused to follow Carlos’s strict spiritual and dietary rules (the Gracie Diet), choosing to eat and live as he pleased.
Fight Career & Family Feuds
Unbeaten Run: George went on a legendary unbeaten streak, famously defeating top Capoeira fighters, powerlifters, and Japanese Jiu-Jitsu practitioners like Geo Omori. He was hot-headed; he once beat up a wrestler in a public square for claiming their family’s victory was a fix.
The Split from Carlos: George frequently clashed with Carlos over fight management and family politics. The rift deepened when Carlos refused to let George fight his brother Helio for a massive prize purse.
The Luta Livre Defection: To Carlos’s fury, George began training and competing with rival Luta Livre (catch wrestling/no-gi) fighters. Carlos publicly disowned him as a representative of the Gracie system, prompting George to write a scathing letter to the press claiming Carlos had no fighting competence and that he, George, built the family’s sporting legacy.
Later Years: After Helio retired in 1938, George was the only active Gracie fighter left in Brazil for years. He eventually moved to São Paulo to become a businessman, though his lavish lifestyle often left him in financial trouble. He later re-established tense contact with his brothers but feuded with Helio over opening a low-cost academy using the “Gracie” name.
