Paulo Strauch

Paulo Mauricio Strauch (born in 1952) is a 9th-degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu red belt. He is a prominent figure in the BJJ community, having trained directly under Master Reylson Gracie before establishing himself as a highly successful coach in Rio de Janeiro.

Early Life and Training
Delayed Start: Strauch first grew interested in Jiu-Jitsu in 1968 after witnessing a class taught by Reylson Gracie. However, due to life obligations, he was unable to officially begin training until 1975. Once he started, he dedicated all of his time to mastering the art.

The Born Coach: A unique distinction of Master Strauch’s career is that he never competed in Jiu-Jitsu tournaments. Instead, his focus was entirely on teaching. He began his instructional career in 1979 as an assistant coach.

Rapid Progression: Despite his lack of a competition record, his technical mastery allowed him to earn his black belt in just 5 years, receiving all of his belt ranks directly from Reylson Gracie.

Academy and Teaching Legacy
Jiu Jitsu Strauch: In 1984, he opened his own academy on Djalma Ulrich Avenue in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro. After a brief move, the academy permanently settled into its world-famous location on Nossa Senhora de Copacabana Avenue.

Creating World Champions: As a coach, Strauch became renowned for his technical instruction—with the triangle choke being his favorite position. He has produced numerous elite grapplers, most notably the multiple-time world champion Caio Terra and Alexandre Vieira.

Reaching the Pinnacle: In 2012, Master Strauch was awarded his 9th-degree red belt, cementing his status as one of the few men to achieve the highest honor in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
