Overview
Professor Ronaldo Souza dos Santos, universally immortalized across martial arts lore by his legendary moniker “Jacaré,” is an elite Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, an IBJJF Hall of Fame caliber icon, an ADCC Hall of Fame inductee, and a former Strikeforce Middleweight Champion. Widely celebrated as one of the most physically terrifying, explosive, and submission-oriented grapplers to ever step onto a mat, Jacaré defined an entire competitive era through his ferocious takedown transitions, relentless top passing, and unshakeable warrior spirit. Holding a black belt under master trainer Henrique Machado, his transition into mixed martial arts produced a legendary blood-and-guts campaign, cementing him as one of the greatest dual-sport combat athletes in history.
Early Life & The Birth of the Alligator
Ronaldo Souza was born on December 7, 1979, in Vila Velha, Espírito Santo, Brazil, navigating a highly turbulent childhood. Following a deeply traumatic event on his 15th birthday, his mother relocated his residency to the remote Amazonian hub of Manaus, Amazonas, to live with his brother. It was in Manaus that he met Master Henrique Machado, a BJJ black belt and 5th-dan Judo black belt, who recognized the young athlete’s exceptional raw athleticism, explosive fast-twitch attributes, and deep intensity. Machado took him under his wing, providing the housing, nutrition, and grueling daily training that would forge a legend.
Though initially hesitant about the sport, Jacaré’s fierce competitive drive quickly took over. He tore through the colored belt divisions with terrifying speed, famously capturing double gold (weight and absolute) as a brown belt at the 2003 World Championships while submitting nearly every opponent in his path. Recognizing his technical purity and elite guard parameters, Master Machado hand-promoted Jacaré to the rank of black belt later that same year, setting the stage for one of the most meteoric rises the sport had ever witnessed.
The Mythic Roger Gracie Rivalry & The 2004 Miracle
Jacaré exploded onto the black belt landscape by setting up an iconic, generation-defining rivalry against the legendary Roger Gracie. The absolute peak of this historic feud materialized at the 2004 IBJJF World Championships inside the Tijuca Tennis Club in Rio de Janeiro. Entering the absolute (open-weight) finals, Jacaré was trapped halfway through the match inside a deep, hyperextended straight armbar by the towering Gracie. Refusing to tap out, Jacaré let his arm dislocate and break, sliding his limp limb inside his gi belt to keep it secured. Weaponizing pure psychological grit, explosive sweeps, and tactical posture, he dynamically eluded further submission attacks to secure a historic points victory, cementing an undying legacy of warrior resilience.
He followed his 2004 miracle by returning in 2005 under the ASLE and Brasa banners to claim absolute sport perfection, capturing double-gold honors (Weight & Absolute) at the Gi Worlds before migrating his focus to no-gi grappling. On the submission wrestling circuit, Jacaré emerged as an absolute force under the ADCC banner, capturing his weight division in 2005. He capped off his pure tournament grappling career in 2009 by systematically out-grappling Robert Drysdale to claim the prestigious ADCC Absolute Superfight Championship title, finishing his grappling career with an astonishing 47 elite wins—including 27 submissions—while only being tapped out a single time in his entire life.
Strikeforce Royalty & The UFC Octagon Era
Having conquered every mountain inside the submission grappling universe, Jacaré successfully translated his world-class ground pressure into a professional mixed martial arts career. Developing explosive, concussive knockout power to complement his elite takedowns, he captured the vacant Strikeforce Middleweight Championship in August 2010 by defeating Tim Kennedy via unanimous decision, subsequently defending his throne against future UFC champion Robbie Lawler.
Transitioning into the UFC octagon in 2013, Jacaré instantly transformed into a perennial top contender on the planet. During a highly publicized, legendary run, he weaponized his signature, crowd-pleasing post-fight “alligator crawl” celebration following spectacular stoppage triumphs over elite world-tier champions including Chris Weidman, Vitor Belfort, Gegard Mousasi, and Derek Brunson. Inducted into the prestigious ADCC Hall of Fame, Professor Ronaldo “Jacaré” Souza stands securely enshrined at the absolute pinnacle of martial arts majesty—an eternal monument to uncompromised mental fortitude, physical dominance, and technical supremacy.
