About

Sergio Penha (born August 20, 1959, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) is a historic figure, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu red-and-black coral belt (7th degree), and a Judo black belt. Widely recognized as a Jiu-Jitsu prodigy during the golden era of the 1980s, Penha is celebrated as one of the primary innovators of the modern closed guard position and the man who gave the legendary Rickson Gracie the toughest test of his entire competitive career.A Rapid and Historic RiseBefore stepping onto the mats, Penha was an active beach volleyball player and swimmer in Rio de Janeiro. In 1977, at age 17, he began training Jiu-Jitsu and Judo concurrently under the illustrious master Osvaldo Alves.Training out of a tiny, padded room in Alves’ private residence—where the mats were so small that no more than four people could spar at once—Penha developed at a meteoric pace. Alongside training partner Pascoal Magalhães, Penha began heavily evolving the closed guard, transforming it from a purely defensive holding position into a highly dynamic offensive platform. His progression was so extraordinary that he achieved the rare feat of being promoted directly from purple belt to black belt in just three years, completely bypassing the brown belt rank with the formal approval of Grand Master Helio Gracie. The Legendary Clash with Rickson GracieJust a few weeks after receiving his black belt, a young Penha tested his new rank at a major tournament in the absolute (open weight) division. In the semifinals, he faced the undisputed king of the era, Rickson Gracie. What followed became one of the most celebrated and legendary matches in BJJ history. Penha pushed the “almighty” Gracie further than anyone ever had before, executing brilliant sweeps and guard work to mount a staggering $15times0$ lead on points. Though Rickson ultimately pulled off a dramatic submission victory in the final seconds of the match, Penha’s performance cemented his status as an elite, world-class technician. From the Mats to the SkiesAt the young age of 22, Penha made a major life decision to pursue a career as a commercial airline pilot. For the next two decades, his grappling activities took a secondary role as he flew routes and resided across Brazil, Portugal, and the United States. The Return to Jiu-Jitsu and Las Vegas LegacyAt age 44, after 22 years in the aviation industry, Penha made the bold decision to retire from piloting and return to his true passion full-time. He moved to Las Vegas, Nevada—the capital of the combat sports industry—to open his own academy, Sergio Penha & The Art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.His academy quickly grew into a premier training headquarters, molding champions across both sports jiu-jitsu and mixed martial arts. Among his most notable achievements as a coach, Penha famously awarded former UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir his BJJ black belt and trained TUF Season 1 finalist Stephan Bonnar. In recognition of his immense lifelong contributions, technical mastery, and prestige within the grappling community, the CBJJ awarded Penha his 7th-degree coral belt on June 7, 2010.
