Overview
Tye Ruotolo is a world-class professional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt athlete representing the elite Atos Academy. Making up one half of the globally recognized and historically significant “Ruotolo Twins” alongside his brother Kade, Tye has been a defining household name in the grappling community since childhood. Celebrated for his kinetic puzzle-solving, chaotic scrambles, and unyielding submission hunting, he has shattered long-standing age and rank records on the sport’s grandest professional circuits to establish himself as a premier vanguard of modern ground combat.
Early Life & The Child Prodigy Blueprint
Tye Ruotolo was born in January 2003 on the island of Maui, Hawaii, USA, and was raised within the surfing and martial arts cultures of Huntington Beach, California. Immersed in the jiu-jitsu lifestyle by his parents from infancy, Tye initialized his competitive path at the exceptionally young age of three, stepping onto tournament mats under the guidance of coach Cleber Luciano.
Tye and Kade rapidly evolved into the sport’s very first major child prodigies, capturing international media attention and securing a groundbreaking lifestyle sponsorship with the surf/skate apparel brand RVCA at just 10 years old. The twins spent four highly formative years sharpening their technical baselines under the meticulous instruction of legendary multi-time world champions Guilherme and Rafael Mendes at the Art of Jiu-Jitsu (AOJ) academy. In 2017, the family transitioned their residency and training camp to the Atos Jiu-Jitsu Headquarters in San Diego, California. Under the direct, rigorous tutelage of Master André Galvão, Tye’s relentless pacing exploded into a lethal physical template, culminating in his formal black belt promotion in December 2021 at the age of 18.
Breaking Records: The ADCC Crucible and World Championships
Ruotolo’s transition from the youth divisions into adult professional grappling was nothing short of cinematic, repeatedly dismantling established institutional paradigms. At the 2019 ADCC World Championships—the absolute pinnacle of submission wrestling—Tye was invited to step into the bracket as a 16-year-old blue belt. He proceeded to shock the global community by aggressively out-scrambling and defeating world-class black belt icons Bruno Frazatto and Pablo Mantovani, securing a spectacular 4th-place finish to solidify his status as the youngest semifinalist in ADCC history.
Bypassing the traditional black belt adjustment period entirely, Tye entered the 2022 IBJJF World Championship with a point to prove. Navigating a shark tank of veteran lightweights, he captured the coveted gold medal to officially stand as the youngest-ever IBJJF Black Belt World Champion. He backed up his gi dominance across the premier professional no-gi platforms, capturing the WNO Championship belt and orchestrating a mythical open-weight run at the 2022 ADCC World Championships. Giving up significant structural weight to elite heavyweights, Tye out-hustled former ADCC Absolute Champion Felipe Pena and submission hunter Pedro Marinho to claim a historic absolute bronze medal.
“Scramble-Jitsu” Dynamics & Global ONE Dominance
On the international stage, Professor Ruotolo has become a principal anchor and dominant centerpiece of ONE Championship’s elite submission grappling divisions. He routinely treats global arenas as his personal combat laboratory, collecting high-profile victories over legendary mixed martial artists and grapplers such as Garry Tonon, Marat Gafurov, and Izaak Michell.
Tye’s style is characterized by a hyper-aggressive, chaotic yet structurally flawless methodology dubbed “Scramble-Jitsu.” Rather than adhering to classic, slow-pacing positional control, he deliberately forces high-velocity transitions, relying on world-class leg lock defense to render opponents’ lower-body attacks entirely useless. Weaponizing an oppressive leg-pin guard passing model, instantaneous back-takes, and an incredibly sharp, suffocating D’Arce choke system, Professor Tye Ruotolo stands enshrined at the absolute mountaintop of contemporary combat sports as a symbol of evolutionary technical purity, competitive fearlessness, and martial arts majesty.
