Overview

Adam Wardziński, often affectionately nicknamed “Megatron,” is a historic Polish grappler and a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). Widely regarded as one of the premier heavyweight competitors of his generation, he broke monumental barriers for European grappling by becoming the first Polish athlete to win an IBJJF World Championship at the black belt level, as well as the first European to conquer the prestigious IBJJF Grand Slam.

Early Life and Martial Arts Journey

Born on April 22, 1991, in Western Poland, Wardziński was introduced to martial arts at age 14 through Aikido, a discipline chosen by his parents. While he trained in the style for an extensive period, he eventually grew disillusioned by its lack of hand-to-hand combat effectiveness and competitive outlet.

Long before he ever stepped foot onto a BJJ mat, Adam became fascinated by submission grappling, obsessively studying matches and instructional videos on YouTube throughout his mid-teens. Driven by a desire to test himself in live competition, he officially began training Jiu-Jitsu at the age of 18 under Karol Matuszczak of Combat Zone Poznan—a prominent grappling pioneer in Poland. Matuszczak guided Wardziński all the way from white belt to brown belt.

Connecting with “Finfou” and Reaching Black Belt

As a blue belt, Wardziński’s passion for the sport led him to begin coaching a small group of students in Poznań alongside his close friend and fellow instructor, Andrzej Stolzmann.

While climbing the ranks as a brown belt, Adam crossed paths with world-renowned Brazilian competitor and instructor Alan “Finfou” do Nascimento, who was teaching in nearby Sweden. Wardziński invited Finfou to Poland to host a seminar and was so profoundly impressed by his coaching methodology that he requested to affiliate his academy under Finfou’s guidance. The relationship flourished, and in October 2016, Alan Finfou officially promoted Adam Wardziński to black belt in a ceremony attended by legendary heavyweight champion Marcus “Buchecha” Almeida.

Historic Grand Slam and Elite Career

Competing under the global Checkmat banner, Wardziński established himself as a dominant force on the international circuit, celebrated primarily for his masterclass execution of the traditional Butterfly Guard—a modern rarity in a sea of lapel-heavy guards.

His competitive career reached legendary heights when he captured back-to-back IBJJF World Championships. Most notably, he made history by winning the elusive IBJJF Grand Slam, conquering gold medals at the sport’s “Big Four” tournaments—the European Open, Pan American Championship, Brazilian Nationals (Brasileiro), and the World Championship—within a single calendar year.
