Overview
Master Romero “Jacaré” Cavalcanti is one of the most prominent, universally respected figures and master instructors in the history of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. As the primary visionary behind the global powerhouse alliance known as Alliance Jiu-Jitsu, Cavalcanti has left an indelible mark on contemporary sport grappling. Forged directly under the revolutionary guidance of Grand Master Rolls Gracie, Jacaré transformed over four decades of technical mastery into an unparalleled coaching legacy. Operating from his flagship headquarters at Alliance Jiu-Jitsu Atlanta, his sophisticated approach to athletic development has direct-produced hundreds of world-class competitors, positioning him as a defining architect of modern BJJ.
Early Life & The Rolls Gracie Matrix
Romero Cavalcanti was born on October 17, 1952, in Recife, the capital of the northeastern Brazilian state of Pernambuco. Moving to the combat sports epicenter of Rio de Janeiro at a young age, he initiated his martial arts journey in his early teenage years under Jaildo Gomes. Seeking to elevate his competitive capacity, he transitioned into a Carlson Gracie affiliate training hall directed by an aggressive brown belt named “Toninho.” Recognizing Cavalcanti’s elite baseline attributes, Toninho routinely brought the young prospect directly into the flagship Gracie Academy to harden his technical skills against top-tier heavyweights.
Following a brief academic hiatus from the sport in the early 1970s to pursue university studies in New York City, Cavalcanti crossed paths with and befriended his future mentor, the legendary Rolls Gracie. Returning to Rio de Janeiro in late 1974, Jacaré immediately submerged his lifestyle inside Rolls’ pioneering training room, where the visionary master functioned as both a primary technical guide and an influential father figure. Thriving inside this hyper-evolved environment, Cavalcanti sharpened his guard mechanics and sweeping matrices alongside icons like Rickson Gracie and Carlos Gracie Junior. In 1982, his unwavering dedication culminated in a historic milestone: he received his black belt graduation directly from Rolls Gracie, standing as the last individual to enter that elite, five-member circle before Rolls’ tragic hang-gliding accident later that same year.
The Alliance Coalition & The Global Atlanta Frontier
In the wake of his mentor’s passing, Cavalcanti preserved Rolls’ open-minded training methodologies by establishing the “Jacare Jiu-Jitsu Academy.” The facility rapidly transformed into a hyper-competitive hotbed for world-class talent. In 1993, recognizing that the sport was transitioning toward massive corporate teams, Cavalcanti joined forces with his premier black belt graduates—including Fabio Gurgel and Alexandre “Gigi” Paiva—to formally co-found Alliance Jiu-Jitsu. This legendary coalition disrupted established team hierarchies, eventually capturing a historic, record-breaking haul of IBJJF World Team Championships.
Driven to export this dominant athletic curriculum to North America, Master Jacaré relocated permanently to the United States in 1995, establishing his ultimate headquarters at Alliance Jiu-Jitsu Atlanta in Georgia. His rigorous coaching standards and analytical approach to positional transitions caught the attention of the global grappling community, earning him the prestigious “On The Mat” Instructor of the Year distinction in 2009.
Now holding the majestic rank of 8th-Degree Red and White Coral Belt, Professor Cavalcanti has curated a multi-generation instructional tree, direct-producing icons like [Rodrigo “Comprido” Medeiros](https://bjjbloodline.com/teacher/rodrigo-medeiros-2/), Ricardo Vieira, and Roberto Traven. Remaining an active anchor of technical purity and martial arts dignity, Master Romero “Jacaré” Cavalcanti stands immortally enshrined as an elite general of the gentle art.
