Demian Maia is a 3rd degree black belt under Fabio Gurgel and one of the most celebrated BJJ practitioners to compete in MMA. A 2007 ADCC World Champion (absolute) and two-time IBJJF World Champion, Maia brought world-class grappling into the UFC spotlight with a long career as a top welterweight contender. His ability to take opponents down and submit them — accumulating 28 career submission victories in MMA — is widely regarded as one of the finest displays of BJJ in cage competition. He challenged for the UFC Welterweight Championship and remains a legend of both sport BJJ and MMA.
