Overview
Nobuhiro Sawada is a Japanese Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and one of the premier international representatives of the Tri-Force Academy. Competing in the Roosterweight division, Sawada is widely recognized as one of Japan’s top modern submission grapplers, celebrated for his technical precision, aggressive armbar setups, and specialized innovations like his signature “Sawada-bar.” Formally promoted to black belt in June 2017 by Master Mitsuyoshi Hayakawa, his transitional legacy as a World No-Gi Champion and international pioneer firmly positions him at the vanguard of contemporary combat sports history.
Early Life & Total Devotion to Jiu-Jitsu
Born on June 23, 1991, in Urayasu, Chiba Prefecture, Japan, Nobuhiro Sawada was introduced to combat sports through karate as a young child before taking up table tennis at age 11. However, watching iconic MMA events like PRIDE FC—and particularly Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu legends like Antônio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira—reignited his passion for grappling and submission mechanics.
At age 18, Sawada joined the Tri-Force Academy under founder Mitsuyoshi Hayakawa, quickly emerging as one of the program’s top technical prospects. To fully commit to his athletic ambitions, Sawada made the life-changing decision in April 2017 to resign from his job as a government official and pursue Jiu-Jitsu full-time. Recognizing his technical mastery and dedication, Master Hayakawa promoted him to black belt just two months later in June 2017.
International Championship Success
Upon entering the elite black belt ranks, Sawada made immediate history by becoming one of the few Japanese athletes to earn major IBJJF World No-Gi titles at both the colored and black belt levels. He secured gold at the 2017 IBJJF American National Championship before capturing the pinnacle of his competitive career: gold at the 2018 IBJJF World No-Gi Championship.
Sawada maintained his top-tier standing on the global stage through a victory at the 2018 UAEJJF Grand Slam Tokyo, a JBJJF All Japan title, and additional podium finishes at the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship through 2024.
The Sawada Blueprint & Technical Precision
Tactically, Nobuhiro Sawada is world-renowned for his lightning-fast armbar entries and surgical guard mechanics. Operating with extreme agility and timing, he systematically unbalances opponents before isolating the upper limb.
His defining technical contribution to modern grappling is the **”Sawada-bar”**—a highly effective, proprietary armbar variation and setup that leverages subtle body-weight shifts to trap the opponent’s elbow and force swift tapouts. Nobuhiro Sawada stands securely enshrined at the absolute peak of modern Japanese grappling history—an eternal monument to total athletic dedication, submission innovation, and uncompromised martial arts excellence.
