About
Rodrigo de Oliveira Cabral, universally known by his nickname “Brucutu” (born July 7, 1981, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), is a highly accomplished Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Leonardo Vieira. Renowned for his heavy, pressure-oriented game in the heavier weight divisions, Cabral transitioned a competitive career disrupted by injuries into a highly successful coaching legacy, founding one of the premier grappling hubs in the American South.Martial Arts Journey & Global TravelsCabral began his jiu-jitsu training in 1999 under Fredson Alves at the historic Gracie Humaitá headquarters. After a brief hiatus, he returned to the mats under world champion Marcos Norat, who awarded him his purple belt, followed by a brown belt promotion from Rocian Gracie.Looking to expand his horizons, Cabral relocated to São Paulo, where he integrated into the elite training rooms of Leonardo Vieira. His journey subsequently took him to London, England, where he spent the early 2000s teaching and studying. Upon returning to Rio de Janeiro, he trained intensively under Ricardo Vieira, who officially promoted Cabral to black belt in 2005 on behalf of his brother, Leonardo.Injury Setbacks & Shift to CoachingDuring the peak of his competitive career in the mid-2000s, Cabral was widely regarded as one of Checkmat’s most promising heavyweight prospects. However, he was severely plagued by a series of training accidents that required major surgeries on both of his shoulders. While these physical setbacks prevented him from reaching his full athletic potential on the world stage, they pivoted his focus toward coaching. He returned to England and took over the London Fight Factory, exponentially growing the small team into a dominant regional powerhouse through his precise technical breakdowns and structured discipline.Main Achievements1st Place: CBJJ Brazilian Nationals (2011 Master)1st Place: FJJR Rio State Championship (2008)1st Place: IBJJF Austin Open (2017 Master)1st Place: IBJJF Dallas Open (2012)1st Place: IBJJF London Open (2005)1st Place: UK Grappling Challenge (2007)2nd Place: IBJJF Masters World Championship (2012)Nickname Origin: “Brucutu” is the name of a rugged, powerful caveman character from a famous classic cartoon in Brazil (Alley Oop), given to him by Leonardo Vieira due to his physical resemblance and heavy rolling style.Weight Division: Meio Pesado / Pesado (88 kg – 94 kg / 194 lbs – 207 lbs)Team Affiliation: Checkmat / Zenith BJJThe Texas LegacyIn the mid-2010s, Cabral permanently relocated to the United States and settled in Austin, Texas.
