Overview
Rubens Charles Maciel, universally recognized across the global grappling community by his iconic moniker “Cobrinha,” is a legendary Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt representing the Alliance Team alliance. Widely acclaimed by historians as the single greatest lightweight (Peso Pena) competitor to ever compete, Maciel is a formal IBJJF Hall of Fame inductee, a multi-time World Champion, and a 3-time ADCC Champion. Renowned for his hyper-fluid, aggressive style and a near-impenetrable mastery of open-guard systems, his architectural contributions to the sport as both an athlete and an elite master educator have left an permanent mark on modern ground combat sciences.
Early Life & Capoeira Master Foundations
Rubens Charles Maciel was born on December 24, 1979, in Londrina, a city located in the northern region of Paraná, Brazil, before relocating to São Carlos during early childhood. Like many youth across the nation, his initial athletic passions centered on competitive soccer fields. However, his entire perspective shifted dramatically during adolescence upon discovering Capoeira—the rich Afro-Brazilian martial art that integrates rhythm, dance, acrobatics, and tactical striking.
He joined the historic “Grupo dos Jangadeiros” under the elite supervision of Capoeira Master Antonio Zacaria, subjecting himself to a grueling, high-performance training protocol consisting of two intensive training sessions a day, seven days a week. Maciel dedicated 14 full years to mastering the discipline, eventually graduating to the highly respected rank of Master. The extraordinary flexibility, dynamic core stability, and feline speed he cultivated during his Capoeira tenure earned him his permanent, defining moniker “Cobrinha” (Portuguese for “Little Snake”), an athletic asset that would later dictate his legendary guard mobility.
The Tererê Invitation & The Five-Year Black Belt
Cobrinha entered the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu relatively late at age 21, walking into a local academy after a close friend invited him to inspect a newly opened martial arts gym. During his inaugural trial session, he was effortlessly controlled and neutralized by a standard purple belt. Completely fascinated by the scientific efficiency of leverage over raw power, Cobrinha committed himself to the “Arte Suave” the next morning under the tutelage of Mauro Pacífico, transferring his relentless, seven-days-a-week training work ethic directly to the mats.
His athletic path experienced a major evolution during a high-stakes state championship in São Paulo. After battling through the bracket to reach the tournament finals, he dropped a close encounter to a premier student representing the legendary Fernando Tererê. Witnessing Cobrinha’s raw kinetic talent and unmatched resilience, Tererê directly approached the young prospect, inviting him to move to the state capital. With the formal blessing of his original instructor, Cobrinha relocated to submerge himself inside the world-famous, hyper-competitive TT Team shark tank. Living penniless on the academy floor, he sharpened his technical blade alongside future monsters of the sport like André Galvão and Lucas Lepri, while receiving daily, highly specialized private mentorship from Tererê. His meteoric rise through the ranks culminated in 2005 when Tererê hand-promoted Cobrinha to the rank of black belt after just five years of formal training—one of the fastest ascents in modern history.
The Alliance Juggernaut & Master Coaching Empire
Following the structural dissolution of the TT Team due to Tererê’s highly publicized personal struggles, the master advised Cobrinha to transition his talents under his own former mentor, Fabio Gurgel. This strategic migration marked the dawn of a historic, golden partnership with the international Alliance Team. In 2007, looking to establish a dominant footprint in North America, Cobrinha moved to the United States after Romero “Jacaré” Cavalcanti offered him a head coaching position at the prominent Alliance headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. Operating from his new American base, Cobrinha acted as a terrifying competitive juggernaut, clearing out the world’s elite featherweights across both Gi and No-Gi formats.
Beyond his dominant individual gold medals at the Worlds, Pans, Europeans, and ADCC championships, Professor Cobrinha achieved parallel acclaim as a world-class mastermind coach. He was central to hand-crafting and refining the technical architectures of multi-time world champions, most notably guiding the early championship paths of Michael Langhi and Sergio Moraes. He later transitioned his operations to Southern California, establishing his highly successful flagship facility in Los Angeles. Remaining an active icon of technical elegance, flawless conditioning, and martial arts dignity, Master Rubens “Cobrinha” Maciel stands immortally enshrined as the definitive king of the featherweight division.
