Overview

Dominyka Obelenyte is a historic, Lithuanian-born Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and one of the most structurally accomplished female grapplers of her generation. Representing Alliance Jiu Jitsu during her competitive peak, she belongs to the first generation of elite homegrown talent developed at Marcelo Garcia’s New York City academy, holding the distinct honor of being Garcia’s very first female black belt graduate. A true prodigy from her early teenage years, Obelenyte is a multi-time World and Pan American champion in both her weight and the absolute black belt divisions.

Early Life and Martial Arts Journey

Dominyka Obelenyte was born on July 30, 1995, in Kaunas, Lithuania. At the age of six, she and her family relocated to the United States. Driven to build confidence and practical self-defense frameworks, her father enrolled her in traditional Japanese Ju-Jutsu classes when she was seven years old. When her family later settled in New Jersey at age nine, they were unable to locate a nearby Japanese Ju-Jutsu club. After briefly experimenting with Taekwondo and finding its striking systems impractical for her grappling needs, the family discovered an advertisement for Louis Vintaloro’s Performance Jiu-Jitsu academy in Fair Lawn, New Jersey.

Training under the Gracie Humaitá banner, Dominyka rapidly fell in love with jiu-jitsu’s close-contact mechanics and quickly scaled the youth ranks to orange belt. Seeking a high-intensity, competition-focused environment, she eventually followed senior teammates—including future superstar JT Torres—to cross-train under the Team Lloyd Irvin collective. Due to the long commute to the main Maryland facility, Dominyka honed her baseline guard games via regular private lessons with Torres and the legendary female pioneer Emily Kwok.

The Rise of a Prodigy under Marcelo Garcia

Recognizing her exceptional spatial awareness, Kwok introduced the young athlete to four-time ADCC Champion Marcelo Garcia’s newly established headquarters in Manhattan. Under Garcia’s personalized tutelage, Dominyka’s technical guard systems flourished. At just 14 years old, she shocked international analysts by conquering the adult women’s blue belt lightweight division at the IBJJF World Championship. Making the victory even more astonishing, she had dislocated a rib weeks prior; the intense fever-inducing medication she took caused her to step onto the scales ten pounds underneath the official division limit.

Her meteoric rise through the major competitive brackets continued seamlessly under Garcia, who awarded her a brown belt at age 17 and ultimately promoted her to the rank of black belt on January 15, 2015. In her very first year as a 19-year-old black belt, she captured the absolute pinnacle of sport achievement by securing the coveted “double gold” (both the Heavyweight and Absolute divisions) at the IBJJF World Championships—a feat she flawlessly repeated in 2016. In September 2016, seeking a personal transition, she parted ways with Garcia’s academy on mutual terms, shifting her home training camp to Fábio Clemente’s academy in New York.

Grappling Architecture and The Equal Pay Movement

Competing primarily in the Heavyweight (Peso Pesado) division, Obelenyte is highly revered for her complex and lethal Open Guard variations—specifically her surgical mastery of the Omoplata shoulder lock and classic Spider Guard configurations—which she pairs with a heavy, unyielding pressure-passing flow from top positions.

Beyond her competitive dominance, Dominyka stands as a pivotal figure in the sociopolitical landscape of modern Jiu-Jitsu. In June 2015, following an unbalanced prize money structure announcement by the IBJJF for its premier Pro League event, she engineered a high-profile international petition titled “Give female competitors equal financial opportunities and rewards.” The campaign generated widespread media attention, successfully pressuring the federation into reconstructing its corporate compensation model to establish equal financial payouts for male and female champions worldwide.
