Overview
Professor Gabriel Goulart is an accomplished world-class Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt competitor and the head instructor-owner of Alliance Jiu Jitsu San Fernando Valley. Competing primarily within the highly athletic Middleweight (Peso Médio) division, Goulart defined his competitive era through an incredibly aggressive and sophisticated open guard template. Formally graduated to the black belt ranks under the direct curation of the legendary Master Fábio Gurgel at the world-renowned Alliance headquarters, his multi-time World, Pan, and Brazilian National crowns permanently secure his legacy at the vanguard of contemporary martial arts majesty.
Early Life & The Capoeira Transition
Gabriel Rodrigues Goulart was born on September 6, 1983, in Uberlândia, located in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Displaying sharp athletic drive from his youth, he spent his childhood playing a wide variety of competitive sports, including swimming and futsal (5-a-side indoor soccer). It was during soccer practice that he met and formed a lifelong brotherhood with future lightweight legend Lucas Lepri. Goulart excelled on the futsal court, commandingly capturing over 70 medals across regional youth divisions.
At age 11, Goulart shifted his primary physical focus away from soccer to train in Capoeira with the prominent Abadá-Capoeira group, practicing directly alongside Lepri. However, around his 16th year, their coach abruptly abandoned the discipline for personal religious reasons, causing the training group to dissolve. Looking for a new physical outlet and heavily inspired by Lepri—who had recently captured an IBJJF World Championship crown as a blue belt—Goulart chose to step onto the grappling mats. Only three months after initiating his formal training under his first instructor, Elan Santiago, 18-year-old Goulart shockingly swept the bracket to win the Brazilian National Beginners Championship.
The Alliance Crucible & Legendary Podiums
Goulart forged his early technical foundations under Santiago, earning his blue and purple belts. When Santiago relocated his residency to South Korea in 2005, Goulart and Lepri jointly took over the reins as the primary head instructors of the academy. Driven to test their parameters against the absolute best on Earth, the two frequently traveled to São Paulo to submerge their lifestyle within the hyper-competitive mats of the mythic TT Team under masters Eduardo Telles and Fernando Tererê, eventually transitioning into the elite Alliance Academy headquarters directed by Master Fábio Gurgel.
In 2008, when Lucas Lepri relocated to the United States, Goulart crossed borders alongside him, establishing his primary training base at the central Alliance academy in Atlanta, Georgia. Training under the elite tutelage of legendary champions Rubens “Cobrinha” Charles and Romero “Jacaré” Cavalcanti, Goulart embarked on an extraordinary, historic competitive run. At the 2008 World Championships, he fought an astonishing 13 times across his division and the absolute open weight bracket, capturing double-gold and receiving his brown belt promotion directly on the podium from Fábio Gurgel. He successfully completed his journey to black belt in 2010 after winning the Gi World Championships as a brown belt for the second consecutive year.
The Goulart Guard Matrix & Modern Californian Pedagogy
Upon entering the elite adult black belt ranks, Professor Goulart immediately validated his lineage. He shook the middleweight categories, establishing himself as a highly dangerous threat and capturing titles like the CBJJ Brazilian National Teams Championship and a silver medal finish at the IBJJF South American Championships.
Tactically, Professor Gabriel Goulart completely rejects conservative sport point-stalling, operating a highly offensive blueprint. He is globally recognized for his world-class execution of the Open Guard, utilizing precise distance control, complex foot-to-hip alignments, and deceptive lapel angles to systematically compromise a passer’s center of gravity. Once he compromises his opponent’s structural posture, his system deploys high-velocity, clinical sweeping matrices to effortlessly capture top position before initiating sharp passing chains. Today, having relocated his residency to California, Professor Gabriel Goulart successfully operates as the owner and head coach of **Alliance Jiu Jitsu San Fernando Valley**. Shifting his personal focus from international tournament fields to masterclass pedagogy, Professor Gabriel Goulart stands securely enshrined at the absolute pinnacle of modern combat sports—an eternal monument to transitional precision, instructional brilliance, and uncompromised martial majesty.
