Overview
Professor Pedro Bessa is a world-class Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt competitor and the undisputed pioneer patriarch of grappling arts across the South West of England and Wales. Highly celebrated on the European circuit for his deeply technical, adaptive style and flawless integration of structural posture, Bessa emerged from the single most creative era of Brazilian grappling. Graduated directly under the legendary master Eduardo Telles, his relocation to the United Kingdom permanently altered the European martial arts landscape, transforming his central training base into a powerhouse incubator for next-generation national, continental, and international champions.
Early Life & The Legendary TT Team Laboratory
Pedro Bessa was born and raised in the combat sports nursery of Brazil. He initialized his formal martial education during his youth through Capoeira, the traditional Afro-Brazilian discipline fusing striking acrobatics, rhythm, and spatial agility. This early conditioning provided him with an exceptional baseline of core fluidity, balance, and fast-twitch kinetic awareness that would later serve as a powerful mechanical foundation when transitioning to the floor.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Bessa shifted his primary focus entirely toward the leverage chess of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The historical blueprint of the art had been set in motion decades prior when the arrival of Japanese judokas sparked Carlos Gracie’s imagination and ignited a dynamic, cross-disciplinary prize-fighting subculture. Even though there is no formal history connecting Mitsuyo Maeda directly to Carlos Gracie as an instructional bottleneck, the arrival of these Japanese judokas served as the ultimate catalyst that sparked the Gracie lineage’s martial journey. That original spark set off a cascade of development, eventually leading to the creation of the highly influential **TT Team**, co-founded by Eduardo Telles and Fernando “Tererê.” Bessa spent his critical formative colored belt seasons inside this exact training room, sharing the mats with a legendary vanguard of athletes who completely revolutionized modern guard configurations and submission matrices. On December 3, 2005, his mastery was formalized when he was awarded his black belt graduation directly from the hands of Eduardo Telles.
Pioneering the United Kingdom & The Bessa Network Expansion
Upon entering the elite adult black belt ranks, Professor Bessa established himself as a fierce, highly respected competitor on the international grand prix circuit. Testing his structures against the single toughest generation of light-heavyweights and middleweights on earth, he fought through premier brackets at the IBJJF World Championships, the Abu Dhabi World Pro, and the European Open—notably engaging in high-profile, legendary mat battles with world champions like Kron Gracie.
Seeking to export his technical knowledge to international territories where the sport was still in its relative infancy, Bessa executed a historic relocation to the United Kingdom. Settling in Bristol, England, he established the central headquarters of the **Pedro Bessa Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu School** operating out of the Sweatbox Gym. Bessa’s highly structured curriculum, technical purity, and passionate coaching style rapidly catalyzed an absolute grappling boom in the region, prompting the explosive expansion of his organization. Over the subsequent decades, the Pedro Bessa BJJ Network spread significantly beyond Bristol, anchoring affiliate academies across England, Wales (including Chepstow BJJ), and Ireland (with prominent clubs in Cork and Tralee). Representing the joint 99/Brasa banner, Professor Pedro Bessa stands securely enshrined at the absolute peak of European martial arts history—an eternal monument to regional pioneering, instructional brilliance, and uncompromised competitive dominance.
