Biography
Born on March 23, 1976, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Leonardo “Leozinho” Vieira is widely regarded as one of the most dynamic and crowd-pleasing grapplers to ever step onto a mat. The son of a janitor, Leo grew up in humble conditions and began his martial arts journey at the tender age of six, training at the historic Academia Master under Romero Cavalcanti.

When Master Cavalcanti partnered with his senior students to form Team Alliance in 1993, Leo became one of the young squad’s premier driving forces. At just 21 years old, standing atop the podium after winning the historic, inaugural 1996 World Championship as a brown belt, he was officially awarded his black belt.

As a rookie black belt in 1997, Leo ignited an legendary rivalry with Gracie Barra’s Marcio Feitosa. Though he dropped the first encounter, Leozinho returned in 1998 to defeat Feitosa in an grueling final to secure his first black belt World Championship title. He would remain at the absolute pinnacle of the sport, capturing the prestigious IBJJF Pan Championship and the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals.

However, Leo reached his absolute athletic peak on the international No-Gi circuit. He captured back-to-back gold medals at the world’s most prestigious submission grappling tournament, the ADCC (Abu Dhabi Combat Club) World Championship, in 2003 and 2005, putting on masterclasses in dynamic wrestling, passing, and back-takes.

In 2002, political friction over tournament prize money led Leo and a massive coalition of elite black belts to break away from Alliance to form Master Team, which later evolved into Brasa Clube de Jiu-Jitsu. Seeking even greater autonomy to build their own vision, Leo and his brothers eventually branched out in 2008 to establish Checkmat BJJ. Under Leo’s masterful guidance, Checkmat grew into a global powerhouse, and he became one of the sport’s greatest coaches—molding iconic champions like Marcus Almeida “Buchecha”, Lucas Leite, and João Assis.

In 2011, after years away from active competition, a 35-year-old Leozinho shocked the community by accepting a late-notice invitation to return to the ADCC. Competing a weight class above his usual division in arguably the toughest bracket in the tournament, the veteran defied the doubters by dismantling the new generation’s elite to capture an iconic silver medal.
