Overview
İbrahim İnal, universally known within the international grappling community by his affectionate nickname “Ibo,” is an elite Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Master Leonardo Vieira. He is widely celebrated as the principal pioneering patriarch and driving structural force behind the development of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and submission grappling in Turkey. Combining an elite background in international track and field with technical systems refined by cross-training alongside Olympic freestyle wrestlers, İnal built a highly decorated international competitive career before anchoring the Checkmat empire across Eastern Europe.
Track & Field Roots to Combat Sports
İbrahim İnal was born on May 23, 1977, in the historic cultural epicenter of Istanbul, Turkey. He spent his youth operating as a highly successful multi-sport athlete, primarily specializing in the explosive throwing segments of track and field. Competing at the elite national tier in shot put and discus throwing, his raw physical power and competitive pacing earned him a coveted spot on the Turkish National Track and Field Squad, where he proudly represented his country in international athletic meets on numerous occasions.
At age 21, seeking a new competitive stimulus to test his athletic attributes, İnal incorporated kickboxing into his cross-training routine. It was not until 2004, while training at his home martial arts complex, that he witnessed Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for the first time. He stood astonished as a visiting purple belt effortlessly controlled, reversed, and submitted sparring partners who possessed significant size, strength, and weight advantages. Mesmerized by the clinical mechanical leverage and tactical efficiency of the art, İnal immediately requested formal instruction, launching his submission grappling journey alongside his close childhood friend Vidal Erkohen.
Cross-Training and Checkmat Integration
İnal initially structured his technical foundation within an affiliate academy of the Valente Brothers network, moving through his blue belt milestone in 2008 and his purple belt promotion in 2011. In 2006, a critical turning point materialized when İnal attended a regional training seminar conducted by ADCC and BJJ icon Leonardo “Leozinho” Vieira. He found himself completely captivated by Vieira’s innovative pedagogical methodology, fluid movement concepts, and dynamic transitions.
Determined to seamlessly blend top-tier, heavy upright control and wrestling scrambles into his open guard passing repertoire, İnal heavily cross-trained alongside elite, Olympic-level Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestlers from the Turkish National Team, including decorated champions Cenk İldem and Kansu İldem. He eventually aligned his entire technical pipeline directly under Leonardo Vieira’s global banner, merging his academy network into Checkmat. On August 11, 2014, following a historically dominant run through the international colored belt master divisions, İnal was officially promoted to the rank of black belt by Leonardo Vieira.
Pioneering BJJ in Turkey & Fighting Style
On the competitive mats, İnal is widely recognized as a highly aggressive, top-heavy powerhouse, utilizing his super-heavyweight (Super Pesado) frame to enforce a masterfully suffocating and systematic guard passing framework that entirely neutralizes flexible open guards. This clinical strategy paved the way for massive international success at the black belt tier, highlighted by double-gold weight and absolute titles at the 2015 IBJJF European No-Gi Open Championships and a podium finish at the IBJJF World Master Championship.
Beyond his individual tournament accolades, İnal’s greatest enduring legacy lies in building a sustainable, institutional infrastructure for Turkish grappling from the ground up. He founded the very first official Checkmat Academy affiliate inside the city of Istanbul. Backed by direct strategic guidance and structural visits from international elite master coaches such as Chico Mendes and Tarcísio Jardim, İnal built his academy into the single premier training hub and competitive incubator in Eastern Europe, successfully putting Turkey on the modern international jiu-jitsu map.
