Overview

Paulo Tarcísio Pessoa Jardim is an accomplished Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt representing the world-class Checkmat team alliance. Competing within the elite, high-impact parameters of the Pesado (Heavyweight — 94 kg / 207 lbs) division, Jardim established himself as a prominent and deeply feared figure across the international tournament circuit. Renowned for his tactical intelligence, unbreakable top pressure, and crushing side control modules, his historic gold-medal championship run at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals anchors his reputation as one of the finest heavyweight competitors to emerge out of Northeastern Brazil.

Early Life & Historical Local Foundations

Tarcísio Jardim was born on July 4, 1983, in João Pessoa, the coastal capital city of the state of Paraíba, Brazil. He initialized his formal entry into ground combat sciences at the age of 15. His introduction to the mats was heavily influenced and catalyzed by his brother, José Carlos, who firmly believed that Tarcísio required a highly practical and realistic method for real-world personal self-defense. Although José Carlos did not actively train the “Arte Suave” himself, he possessed a close personal friendship with a local instructor, prompting Tarcísio to formally enlist at his academy.

Jardim’s foundational development was overseen by his primary coach Nivaldo Cordeiro, a respected regional black belt who trained directly under the legendary Brazilian bare-knuckle Vale Tudo pioneer Ivan Gomes. This intense early room instilled a heavy, combat-oriented survival philosophy in Jardim’s movement patterns. He subsequently transitioned his training camp to an academy directed by coach Luiz Barboza. Under Barboza’s direct supervision and technical mentorship, Tarcísio rapidly climbed through the colored belt ranks, capturing consecutive blue, purple, and brown belt state titles. Throughout this critical developmental period, he also expanded his technical blade by cross-training extensively alongside Helder Medeiros, widely regarded as one of the single most prominent and influential master instructors in the state of Paraíba.

The Vieira Promotion and National Championship Stardom

After entirely cleaning out domestic brackets and validating his position as a world-class brown belt competitor—highlighted by a bronze-medal finish on the sport’s grandest stage at the IBJJF World Championships—Jardim earned his place among the global elite. On February 16, 2008, his historic trajectory culminated in a formal black belt graduation, hand-awarded by two of Checkmat’s core founders, the legendary master brothers Leonardo “Leozinho” Vieira and Ricardo “Rico” Vieira.

Professor Jardim reached one of the absolute creative peaks of his professional athletic career during a legendary 2011 campaign. Competing at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals (Brasileiro)—widely recognized by grapplers as one of the single most grueling and structurally difficult tournaments on the planet—he navigated an incredibly deep bracket of elite heavyweights to reach the tournament finals. Jardim closed out the division to secure the coveted gold medal alongside his elite Checkmat teammate and future mixed martial arts star Antonio Carlos Jr. (popularly known as “Cara de Sapato”). Proving his elite versatility, he also stormed the open-weight absolute brackets to claim a silver medal on the national stage. Throughout his extensive career at the black belt tier, Tarcísio remained a highly active challenger, sharing the competitive arena and measuring his attributes against the mountaintop icons of modern grappling history, including Rodolfo Vieira, Alexandre “Xande” Ribeiro, and André Galvão.

Technical Profile and Positional Dominance

On the international tournament mats, Professor Jardim has constructed an incredibly structured, unforgiving top-game template. Fighting with a dense competitive weight of 94 kg (207 lbs), he completely subverts loose, high-risk scrambling in favor of methodical, suffocating posture control. His absolute favorite technical position is the 100kg (classic Side Control pinning matrix), where he weaponizes precise cross-faces and shoulder driving pressure to inflict spinal misalignment and complete exhaustion upon his opponents.

This calculated tactical baseline is heavily reflected across his professional statistics. Emphasizing position-before-submission safety and flawless defensive frames, 55% of his professional victories are secured via clear point configurations, backed by a 27% advantage margin and an 18% pure submission completion rate. Successfully transitioning from a dominant regional champion into an international black belt general, Professor Tarcísio Jardim stands as an enduring symbol of technical safety, generational lineage preservation, and uncompromised martial arts majesty.
