About

Robert Lewis Drysdale (born October 5, 1981, in Provo, Utah) is a legendary Brazilian-American 4th-degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, retired undefeated mixed martial artist, and a prominent martial arts historian. Widely regarded by BJJ Heroes as “the most accomplished American grappler of his generation,” Drysdale achieved historic milestones by conquering the sport’s most prestigious titles on both the gi and no-gi global circuits.

Dual-Cultural Upbringing & Introduction to BJJ
Born to an American father and a Brazilian mother, Drysdale relocated to Brazil with his family at the age of six. He spent his childhood and adolescence fully immersed in Brazilian culture, discovering jiu-jitsu at age 17 when he stepped onto the mats at the Quatro Tempos Academy in Itú, São Paulo.

As a white belt, Drysdale briefly moved back to the United States to pursue his university studies in Las Vegas. There, he trained under instructor Steve da Silva, who became the first coach to truly recognize his world-class potential. Inspired by his coach’s encouragement and wanting to test himself in the sport’s true epicenter, Drysdale returned to Brazil in 2000. He spent years fully dedicating himself to competition, first under Paulo Streckert at the Maromba academy—where he won a world title as a purple belt—and later joining the elite Brasa Clube de Jiu-Jitsu camp alongside stars like Demian Maia. He was officially promoted to black belt in 2004 by Leonardo Vieira.

Historic ADCC & World Championship Triumphs
Drysdale permanently cemented his legacy as a pioneer for American grapplers through a series of historic international campaigns:

IBJJF World Champion (2005): He became only the second U.S. citizen in history (following BJ Penn) to capture an IBJJF adult black belt World Championship title, dominating the super-heavyweight division.

ADCC Absolute Champion (2007): At the prestigious ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship in Barcelona, Spain, Drysdale pulled off a legendary run in the open-weight division. He capped off his historic gold medal performance by submitting grappling icon Marcelo Garcia in just over two minutes.

MMA Career, Coaching, and Historical Legacy

He ultimately built an undefeated professional MMA record of 7-0, showcasing his lethal submission game on the global stage, including a brief stint in the UFC.

As a world-class coach, Drysdale co-founded Zenith BJJ in 2013 alongside Rodrigo Cavaca. Based out of Las Vegas, Nevada, the association has grown into a global powerhouse. Throughout his coaching career, Drysdale has served as a key trainer and cornerman for multiple UFC World Champions and elite grappling figures, including Forrest Griffin, Frank Mir, Randy Couture, and Michelle Nicolini.

In his later career, Drysdale utilized his college background as a history major to become the premier investigator and historian of the grappling arts. He authored the critically acclaimed book Opening Closed Guard: The Story Behind the Film and produced the documentary Closed Guard: The Origins of Jiu-Jitsu in Brazil, providing the global martial arts community with a highly objective, deeply researched look into the roots of modern combat sports.
